What Are Split Pins?
Split Pins, also known as cotter pins or split cotter pins, are a basic type of metal fastener with two tines that are bent during installation. Split pins are typically made of thick wire or metal that is folded in half with a half-circular cross-section. Split pins come in various sizes and types.

What Are Split Pins Made Of?
Split Pins have to be strong enough to keep components in place whilst being flexible enough to be bent to secure the fastening. Split pins are usually made from aluminium, brass or stainless steel. Some split pins have zinc plating or have been galvanised to protect against corrosion.
How To Use Split Pins?
Split pins are commonly used to fasten a shaft or similar component in place. They are also used to keep machinery aligned. The split pin is placed through a hole and the tines of the pin are then bent to hold the pin in place. You will need a set of pliers or additional tools to help you bend the tines into position. The tines can also be cut down to size before the installation. This helps to prevent any snagging injuries from happening in the future. Split pins are similar to staples in that they are a temporary, light duty fastening.
