Recently, we received an order from one of our engineering customers for drilled studs complete with a socket drive to their bespoke cad drawing. By us having contacts who offer an extensive range of manufacturing options, this supply process was easily performed in a accurate timely manner.
In high-performance and industrial fastening applications, the smallest design details often make the biggest difference. Drilled socket drive studs are a perfect example. While they may look similar to standard studs at first glance, the addition of a precision-drilled hole through the drive end adds functionality, safety, and versatility that many demanding environments require. These were supplied in grade 8.8 high tensile steel with zinc plated as the finish but, other materials such as; 304 or 316 stainless steel, mild steel or alloy can be supplied on request. Most coatings and finishes can also be offered.
Mainly socket drive studs are designed for secure, high-torque installation using an internal hex or similar drive. The drilled feature elevates this design by allowing for safety wire, cotter pins, or locking mechanisms to be added after installation. This is especially valuable in applications where vibration or dynamic loads could lead to loosening over time. By physically preventing rotation, drilled studs provide an extra layer of mechanical security through thread friction and loosening from vibration.
Drilled socket drive studs are commonly used in aerospace, motorsports, heavy machinery, and oil and gas equipment—industries where fastener failure is not an option. In these environments, safety wiring through the drilled hole ensures compliance with strict safety standards and inspection requirements. The drilled design also makes visual inspection easier, as technicians can quickly confirm that locking wire or pins are properly installed.
