Coach Bolts or also known as Cup Square Bolts or Carriage Bolts are a specifically designed bolt used in woodworking. Beneath their much larger domed head, you will find a square section, this square section is designed to be sat into the timber in a countersunk style, hence why the other name Cup Square is also what they can be referred to. The square section sits and grips into the timber to prevent spinning when being tightened.
Carriage bolts are heavy duty bolts and require Pliers, spanners or wrenches to tighten with and they can be used for a variety of different applications such as:

Their most common use if for joining heavy timbers together and for connecting Wood to Metal.

Carriage bolts are very robust, either 3 finishes and materials will provide a decent level of corrosion resistance; however, galvanised are a thicker more robust zinc plated application providing optimal corrosion resistance and rigour against the chopping and changing weather conditions and elements of any country you made reside in.
Standard zinc plated are best for use indoors and are the most inexpensive option compared with Galvanised Steel and Stainless Steel; Speaking of the Stainless option; This option is best used for highly polluted areas and around areas such as coastal areas. They are also best used with oak.
Carriage bolts are flexible bolts, they can be big or small and be used in home DIY projects or massive building projects due to their immense sturdiness and strength; they far outweigh the benefits of nails or many other bolt types due to this reasoning and are crucial when it comes to fixing important and critical points together within a building or structure.
